Had been taking Asmanex, dr wanted me to try Qvar. My symptoms worsened over 2 weeks. Gave it the 3rd week, consulted dr & went back to Asmanex.

I have copd with all componets under the umbrella, restrictive disease and the Qvar was the only one that took that burning feeling out of my chest. I tried all others and nebs and always had a burning in chest. The qvar put it out...I also take foradil first and then qvar and I do not need my rescue inhaler or a neb hardly anymore.... I think more copd patients should get on it and it should also be covered by medicare B instead of D as it is now.

Qvar Review
| Headaches & Hunger
I took Qvar for about three weeks. By the end of the second week, it didn't matter how much I ate, I never felt full or even satisfied. It was terrible. In addition to that, I developed a never-ending headache that went on for over a week. I tried the standard meds, and none of them worked. I finally decided that I just couldn't continue dealing with the side effects and stopped taking the med. The headache cleared up within 2 days, and after about a week, my appetite returned to normal.

I have used Qvar for approximately 5 plus years for asthma and it has worked very well for me. I use a spacer and rinse my mouth out with water after each use to avoid developing thrush, which I have never gotten. I do one quick puff in the a.m. and one quick puff in the p.m. (as opposed to a slower, longer delivery amount). I would like to reduce the usage of this drug and eventually not need to depend on it at all if I can, like everyone (I initially used two puffs twice daily). Maybe in time with a different diet, more exercise or whatever that magic thing is it may happen. I'm hopeful. The basic worry I have is the diabetes aspect - my blood sugar has gone up gradually, but not to an alarming level where meds are needed or anything. It is concerning however, plus it effects a persons eyesight where cataracts can develop. Realistically all drugs have side effects and it is a matter of choosing which ones are most effective and less detrimental. Per my allergy specialist Alvesco is reported not to effect the eyes and centralizes more on the lungs, yet it does have other problems related to it. Is Alvesco's higher risk of weight gain, Depression, Thrush the better trade off over Qvar's elevated sugar levels, cataracts and general effectiveness? Guess it's a personal decision.
