I've been taking geodon for four years and have been battling gi distress on and off. I've completely reworked my diet and come off of wellbutrin and Lamictal in hopes of stopping the stomach issues to no avail. So now I'm going to try to come down some on the geodon to get some relief. I've had avid reflux, stomach cramps, and burping that aren't tied to foods that I'm eating that I suspect the geodon is causing. The other unpleasant side effect I've had is intermittent rhinitis. While geodon totally helped me get stable after ect'S for depression I'm ready to start a taper. I currently take 80 mg at dinner time and am switching it up to 80 mg on an empty stomach at bed time., under doctors orders of course. Can't wait to see of this is the answer I've been looking for on the gi distress. I've had an upper gi and colonialism to rule things out and have worked with a dietician on my diet. I'm just really ready for relief from the stomach aches. Thanks for letting me share

I took Geodon for about a year and a half. Most of that time, at least a year, was spent trying to get off of it. The withdrawal from Geodon was terrible, especially the insomnia. It took tapering off very, very slowly over a long period of time to finally get off of it. The withdrawal made me lethargic, anxious, not able to sleep, and worsened my depression. When I was on it, I was at a very high dose at first-180mg-and the effects dulled my emotions to the extent that I felt like a walking zombie. I had no emotion, couldn't interact with people on a normal level, and isolated myself from others. People commented I had a blank, emotionless look on my face, and I walked around in my own little world. So, Geodon had a terrible effect on my personality and my mental health, and the withdrawal took months to go away. I have heard from my niece, who is a therapist, that getting off Geodon is the number one complaint of people on the drug, so I am not alone. Most of her clients that have taken it want off of it. A friend of mine who is a psychiatrist, said I should have never agreed to take the drug, that it's side effects and withdrawal are a risk when taking it. I didn't meet him until after taking the drug. So, I would say to avoid this medication, although it looks like others on this website had luck with it.

Geodon canceled effects of Vyvanse
| Greg
I've been taking Vyvanse 60 mgs daily since 2009 with great success as far as focusing and alertness. I've always had a lot of anxiety, though, so the doctor put me a very small dose of Geodon (20 mgs at night). I did this for a month and realized that I could no longer focus at work and was lethargic all the time. My anxiety was gone -- almost like I didn't care about things that once caused me stress and anxiety -- but it was like the Geodon was canceling out the effects of Vyvanse. My wife, a pharmacist, looked up the interaction, and that's basically what it said: Geodon affects Vyvanse. Just beware that if you are taking the two that your ADHD med might suffer as a result. We are all different, so maybe it won't for all. Did for me.

hyperthyroid after stopping geodon
| Ladygodzilla
I was just wondering what the connection is between Geodon and thyroid function. I was on Geodon for bi-polar- like symptoms. I went off the Geodon because I was having uncomfortable side effects such as flat affect and anhedonia. I had originally been started on the Geodon when I was in the process of thyroid ablation so they based my dose of thyroid medication on how my body was reacting at the time. Apparently, I never was really bi-polar, I just had several undiagnosed thyroid conditions. Now that my thyroid is gone, I no longer have any signs or symptoms of mental illness. Except that after I stopped the Geodon, I went through a period of several months of hypomania. I was really afraid to say anything about it because aside from lack of sleep and a ton of energy, I was doing well and not having many psychiatric issues. I had some minor instances of seeing ghosts when I was under a lot of stress, but not to the the extent of full psychosis like what I experienced during my last psychotic break. I finally entered into a period of exhaustion and decided to visit my primary doctor. They found that I was hyperthyroid. This explains the symptoms of hypomania I had experienced. They corrected the thyroid medication dose and I am once again asymptomatic of psychiatric issues of any sort. The weird thing is that my hypomania began within weeks after stopping the Geodon. My primary doctor said that the Geodon had probably been blocking my absorption of thyroid hormone while I was on it, so when I went off it, I became hyperthyroid. I have tried to find more information about this but haven't come up with anything. But I think it is important information to have because if Geodon has the potential to affect thyroid function, it can actually be doing more harm than good in some unsuspecting patients. So does anyone have anymore info on this? My doctors are really only guessing about this connection but it makes a whole lot of sense to me.
