Help for Patulous Eustachian Tube (PET) sufferers. PET can cause sufferer to hear their own voice/heartbeat/breathing loud in their heads, they may sniff or throw head forward to stop distortion.
| Serser
After struggling for 32 years with my ears 'popping'; then being able to hear my own voice, breathing, heartbeat and footfall amplified within my own head (autophony). I have recently had a breakthrough - I have Patulous Eustachian Tube (PET). I used to sniff and throw my head forward in an attempt to close the tubes and stop the autophony, but this was only a temporary fix.
I want to raise awareness of this condition which is classed as rare but I think is under/mis-diagnosed.
Statistics say that it is even rarer for children to be diagnosed but I can assure you that I suffered with this condition when I was only 6-7 years old - I was told my eustachian tubes were blocked/dysfunctional, I was prescribed decongestants (which make PET worse) , in reality my problem has always been the opposite, my eustachian tubes have not been closing properly so causing autophony which can have an extremely negative effect on social development. I did have 'glue ear' and ear infections which probably masked the PET.
There are support networks out there for sufferers of PET, there are also medical interventions that can be performed in order to reduce autophony and increase quality of life.
Please, for those of you who have children who may be going through ear problems ask questions about their hearing distortion. As a child I found it impossible to explain the symptoms of autophony, but if someone had guided/listened to me closer and had an awareness of PET I know I would have been able to relate to the symptoms and been able to get help far sooner in my life.
If anyone has any questions or would like to be pointed in the direction for further help regarding this condition I would be happy to assist.

I desperately need guidance in this debilitating condition. I have no support with anyone or doctors to understand this condition. I've had respiratory issues most of my life. I fear I cannot continue with this much longer. It was an in-resident who saw I had abnormal eardrum movement during breathing and said I showed all signs of PET. But instead of an audiology work up, the otolaryngologist sent me to the hospital pyschiatry ward for a 4 day analysis "to find a pyschiatric component of the hearing sensivity"! Pyschiatry knew nothing about ENT. They easily theorized symptoms to be "Depression" or "Anxiety". I consistently tell them it hurts to talk as its too loud-echo sounding. Their voices are too loud. The roaring is excruciating. Their anti-depressants make it worse by adding it's own side effects to it. And STILL no audiology since otolaryngologists claim there's examinations to look or help for it. One dr. offered myringotomy without visual inspection. I don't want to further cut my ears if they can do simpler methods to check?
