Why Melatonin Isn't The Right Choice
6712views
Do not give people medical advice! Look up the effects of diphenhydramine and other sympathomymetics often found in cold preparations and OTC sleep aids on acetylcholine. You should not practice outside your scope of practice as a nurse. Present evidence based practice and let people decide for themselves.
Nurse 1987  |  February 7, 2015
Please don't try to sound like an authority when your experience is thin. You probably did not study melatonin supplementation in nursing school. Study neuro-transmitters before you make blanket statements that OTC products are safer. Try suggesting people speak to their Naturopathic Physician and have a sleep evaluation prior to taking, if you want to suggest safely. "Reports" is anecdotal and out of context. If someone is depressed is very different than someone who just needs more sleep.

My daughter has ADHA and takes Focalin in the morning and after lunch. For the past 6 months I put her to bed at 8. Every night we fight I give her melatonin and she is still up at 11-12. Today her doctor gave her .colonizing .1 but she is only to take half. She went to bed not arguing, no complaining. My baby girl was fast asleep by 8:30.

Agreed. Telling people to rake zzzquil is not appropriate. JAMA just published findings that it can contribute to dementia from blocking acetylcholine. Giving people medical advice without a medical license is practicing outside your scope of practice.
